Welcome to SoundAntiques

SoundAntiques are dedicated to the many unusual instruments we come across, which do not fall into any category on our main websites ( all linked above): SoundAntiques is part of a traditional violin and guitar shop located in Guildford, Surrey, UK. Established in 1972. We are makers, dealers and collectors of fine instruments, and offer many specialized and unique services. We invite you to browse this site, to find out more. Enjoy.

Bowed Instruments:

Pochette: 'Violin' shaped model, Probably English circa 1780, school of Barratt possibly.

Condition: This instrument is lightly restored and conserved, and in near original playable condition. Varnish of a table a darker brown, typical of the period, some ageing on the top only. The neck has been separated from the body at some point, it was originally made in 2 pieces ie, the neck/body joined, now secure, ( sometimes they are made in 1 piece, as in the case of the other similar pochette listed here), the lighter body and neck varnish in very good condition, with post in place, and pegs are the originals, and work well. The bridge is a newer replacement, the body from a one-piece carved and contoured block ie 'ribs' and back are all carved from one block, with out-turned violin corners, and original fingerboard and tailpiece. This pochette is playable, and could be sold with a new set of correctly gauged gut strings fitted at cost, or as it is now, ie for display/collection only.

Other comments: Rare, English, (London 18th C probably,) and an interesting addition to any collection.

Price: 2150 . (Will pack for free, and post anywhere at my cost price.)
